He was forced into mutiny in the Pacific but escaped and was adrift at sea two weeks without food or water. He was captured by Korean pirates and held as hostage. He served in the U. S Navy from 1917 to 1921 and during the first world war served in Naval Intelligence. In 1931 as a member of the naval reserve he was sent to China on a troop ship to train men.

On October 12, 1941, he married Ruth White at Avon Baptist Church in Avon, MA. He honorably served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in Germany. For many years, he worked for Gerald Ash in Waltham, MA. Following his retirement, he and Ruth permanently moved to Cape Cod and spent their winters in Florida.

In 1846, Captain Alvin Cahoon is credited with producing the first such crop from a bog near Pleasant Lake. The venture spread quickly, with others in other towns, counties and states planting their own bogs and producing their own crops for the growing markets.

He married Julia Ann NICKERSON on March 6, 1878, in his hometown. They had five children in 17 years. He died on March 17, 1902, in Chatham, Massachusetts, at the age of 42, and was buried there.

He was the captain of the Boston University ice hockey team, and was elected to the B.U. Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Lax was a member of the 1936 Olympic Ice Hockey Team under Walter Brown. American ice hockey team, which won the bronze medal. He continued to play hockey until World War II.
